How is strategic planning done?

Over the past few articles, we have shared what strategic planning is, why it is important and who should be involved in the process. In today’s post, we address the burning question: “how is strategic planning done?”.

The strategic planning process involves 3 key phases:

  • Phase 1 – UNDERSTAND

This entails understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, assessing it against its competitors, and identifying opportunities for it to thrive in the coming years.

  • Phase 2 – STRATEGISE

This phase involves making decisions on the new direction of the organization, with its leaders and/or key stakeholders.

  • Phase 3 – PREPARE

Now armed with a winning strategic plan, the organisation should prepare for implementation. This is done by embedding monitoring and evaluation mechanisms that will ensure accountability to the strategic plan.

Your strategic plan aims to take your organisation from where it is to where it desires to be. Thus the process must be conducted carefully to ensure an effective outcome. This article by McKinsey provides insights on how to improve this process.
